Haunted Houses?

Being in the real estate business can have some spooky moments! With Halloween almost here, it’s only right to share our spookiest stories with all the spirits haunting our blog this Halloween season:

“I didn’t think it would bother me…” – David Wallner

A few years ago I was working on listing a home for a client. There was only one comparable home in the neighborhood, but a murder had taken place there about two years earlier. Since the home was vacant and bank owned, I requested an agent walk-through and thought I wouldn’t be spooked by the home’s history. I WAS WRONG! It was very creepy! I think the hair on the back of my neck stood up and I found myself looking for blood stains on the carpet.

“We knew it needed a lot of work, but…” – Dave Cortright

I was showing a couple an old Victorian house that had been abandoned and foreclosed on. We knew the bank owned it and it needed a hefty amount of work before it could even be occupied. When we turned on the lights and entered the musty, dirty, Michigan basement (dirt floor, no windows), we saw stains everywhere and 8-10 large, rusted, dirty, dilapidated cages of different sizes. They looked like they probably housed exotic animals at one time. Two were very large and there was a tire swing in one of them. I can’t imagine what kind of existence any animal would have had in that basement. It was more like a dungeon. We were all creeped out and left quickly after seeing that.

“This place is a nightmare…” – Anonymous

I was cleaning out a house for an old friend, to prepare to sell. The homeowner, “Tom,” passed away earlier that year and the home was in need of lots of TLC. I said to my assistant, “This place is a nightmare!” Just then, the lights flickered, a very strong wind came blowing in, blowing open the attic fan vent and slamming the interior doors shut. I yelled, “Tom, knock it off!” and the wind stopped as fast as it had started. My assistant was pretty freaked out!
